Rainy Day

Last week had a couple of very gray days. Driving back from town, I could see a downpour to the west, back behind some hills. I couldn't stop and take a photo, but it stayed in my mind. I finally had to get it out of there since it was haunting me - happily! I knew watercolor would be the perfect medium for this, since it was a watery kind of day. The view is from my imagination and I feel that I'd like to capture the real one. I'll have to wait for another stormy day.

Sketching at the Raptor Center

Today I had the great pleasure of sketching at the Teton Raptor Center, with the wonderful artist Shannon Troxler Thal. I've always loved her work, and having her there to help me as I worked was most inspiring.
I had the opportunity to sketch Ruby the partially blind red-tailed hawk, a real beauty, a bit restless but after a while I understood her shape. Her talons were stunning and I wish I had had more time to sketch them.
I also drew Owly the great-horned owl, a true model at heart as she was pretty still except for a few twists of the head to follow whoever was walking nearby. Her eyes are amazing, and I didn't do them justice, but I'll try again some day.
Sketching live, and birds, not people, was very challenging, and I learnt much in three hours. Observing these birds was also a special moment, as they are mesmerizing.
Thank you, Shannon, for allowing this to happen, it was awesome!

In the park

Cloudy and cool day, and the ever changing afternoon light on the Grand made it a challenge. I need to repay it numerous visits until I get a satisfactory result. That said, is an artist ever satisfied? If so, wouldn't they stop creating?
I was actually looking for bisons to sketch but they were too far away; it was easy to find another subject, one that is ever present.
